Sick Bees

Sick Bees new release, “The Marina Album” is coming to the people care of Seattle’s UP Records. Sick Bees are Starla on guitar & vocals and Julio on drums. Originally from Illinois and Texas, the two girls met and started playing together in Seattle, WA in 1996.

The Sick Bees view the Marina Album as one big song. Starla and Julio spice up their musical mix on the record by adding in an assortment of noise makers here and there, most notably the Clarinet. Starla comments of the variety of instrumental ingredients, “You might hear the fun machine in there. FUNtastic - that machine! And a new garbage can lid from Home Depot!” Starla’s little sister Leigh, of Whitehouse, Texas makes a guest vocal appearance on “D=m/V.” Starla reflects on her sisters contribution, “We had her say the word "weight" instead of "mass" because it sounded so much better with her accent, even though weight and mass are not the same of course.”

Starla of Sick Bees describe their own music like this, “bit jarring but with the daily pop hooks you need for healthy balls and breasts. We do not sing about relationships (usually). We feel that topic has been well explored.”

Sick Bees have no idea where their inspiration comes from. But they are sure that it’s not from a higher power. When asked of their source or creative catalyst, Starla ponders the notion of inspiration in general, “A-sick bees wonders what drives people, too! Isn't that funny? People ARE funny! Ever since we didn't believe in Jesus no more, what drives us has come into question many a time.”

Bottom line, their approach is sonically straightforward, “Jamming makes the song. The vocal idea and direction of said song comes from daily life. You know, anything that happens to be going on in our universe at a particular moment is material for us.”

Sick Bees love being in the studio. But they dig going on the road. “Meeting other bands and people at shows is the whole reason for LIVE. Sometimes the people are super cool and you're super jazzed and you have MEMORIES, just like they said you would.”

What do Sick Bees want listeners to feel when they hear The Marina Album?

Starla states, “I would like them to feel my hand slipping up their pants' leg.” She continues, “Julio and I are aware that these songs are so personal that they may not translate at all. Hopefully the fun we're having will rub off...and we the people who take the time to hear the record, well... get off!”

Sick Bees debut release “On The One” came out in 1998 care of RxRemedy. “My Pleasure” care of UP Records was their sophomore album, released in 2000.Sick Bees plan to follow up The Marina Album with a full-length style batch of new songs scheduled for release on UP Records in late fall of 2005.
