The Big Pink release their first single of 2009 (their debut for 4AD)
on April 20th. ‘Velvet’ is some start too. Self-produced by the band
and mixed by Alan Moulder, the results are breathtaking.
Sure, The Big Pink’s sound is haunted by ghosts of the past – VU, JAMC, MBV - but ‘Velvet’ sees them kick on and achieve that rarest of things; a unique shape that sets them apart. The programmed beats of the intro reveal the band’s digital heart, before huge Serra-esque walls of guitar propel the song forward. Throughout, Robbie’s beautifully
soulful vocal takes the song higher and higher.
After only one limited release single, ‘Too Young To Love’ b/w ‘Crystal Visions’, the band’s reputation has grown through frenzied word of mouth and blistering live shows. The live shows are of a volume and intensity few can match and, augmented by as many as four other musicians,
they are fast becoming an essential act.
Their burgeoning reputation has so far seen them be included in the BBC Sounds long list for 2009, as well as various other magazine polls. Furthermore, they were recently crowned winners of the prestigious Philip Hall Radar Award at the annual NME Awards.
